I still remember the conversations with Colin and others in the *smokers* courtyard (the place where the most interesting people working in the school talked). Endless debate and always good humour. Colin, Jerry, George, Dave, and myself, rain or shine, sat out there to escape the normality of the staff room. I was working as a technician in the school which was quite strange as many of my old teachers were now working at Birkenhead College.

Colin is an inspiration and a good friend. You helped me help friends who are artists who badly needed a work ethic as well as talent!

Can't believe you've moved on but I guess we'll talk again.

Dear Mr. Dobson, You are the teacher who changed my life. You introduced me to a world way beyond the one I had been born into. You pointed the way and you made it possible for me to have the life I have today. If it hadn't been for your art and art history classes, from 85-89, I know I would be somewhere else. I always dreamed of coming back to thank you and I am so shocked and sad that the possibility doesn't exist anymore. You were so incredibly special and I adored you. I still do. with love and respect, Denise

Where do i start? I mean, Mr Dobson was the reason why I kept going to that school, well other than to eat my lunch. When I look back at my time at Birkenhead College I dont look back all that fondly on many things (the staff, the students, the tuck shop, the classes, you get the idea..). However, when ever I get in to any form of conversation about my schooling, Mr Dobson will be the first thing I bring up. Nearly 11 years on since I depareted ways from Birkenhead College and all I really care to remember about Birkenhead College were my classes with Mr Dobson. The coffee cup glued to his hand. The sarcasm laden comments. The Saturday mornings spent in his class room so i could get my 5th form school cert submission up to scratch (and barely passed). All the times he'd scare the living crap out students that were not paying attention with his ruler. The look of glee on his face after startling students. The never ending piles of dead crap that ended up in the middle of room for us to paint/draw/etch. His open love of red wine, his dog and most of all, his family. Also the fact he never took crap from any student at any time. Most of all, he listened, cared and tried to understand, even if it was just teenage crap. Both myself and little mex (Kirstin) will miss him. I never really did get around to saying thanks for making my time at Birkenhead College worth remembering. Thanks Mr D.. Mex

Mr Dobson I was thinking of you as I am in Paris and I went to the Louvre today. You are what inspired me to see it for real and now I am here. I was saddened to hear of your passing. I remember the 6 ringbinder full of notes that I took in my sixth form year which I still have today.

I also remember the scraps that I use to have with a student called Cameron  which at times I am positive that you helped along its way on more than one ocassion but always in good gest.  It was all worth it when I one an award over him in prizegiving though 0.4 of a percent or something like that between the two of us.

Thank you for all that you have inspired in me you will be dearly missed by all that new you

Although it's been a while since my days in C Block, they were the best and that was simply because you rocked. You made such a big impact on my life, you encouraged me to always follow my own path and pushed me to be the best that I could be. You were the smartest, most respectful and most passionate teacher that I have ever encountered. I was extremely upset to hear about your passing as I always expected to be able to drop in and catch up with you upon my return to New Zealand. BUT I shall have a red wine or two in your honour, as I know you wouldn't expect anything less. Rest easy Mr D, you will be missed xo
