Well Sir where to begin?
I now know of the saying of how you don't know what you've got til it's gone.
While still expecting you to come and talk to us, from out of your office, or as we try to listen for your voice or whistling as if this is all a dream, life has become far less enjoyable from the good old times the passed few days with you no longer here.  There is no longer the whistling of your favourite classical numbers you loved so much. No open door to your office which let your music flow out to our ears that soon grew to know well but now have begun to miss  greatly. Slowly our lives in art have stopped, although we do try, there is no more inspiration and music in the air, tea and coffee stains on your table, no echoing of your voice as you yelled at the students who run around C block or you whistling tunes on your way to greet us into class with your apron on ready to start the lesson. There is no voice telling us to have a good weekend, mocking us, and rambling about lunches at a Ponsonby café drinking your red wine or your trout fishing adventures (not holidays).
Sir I am so grateful for what I  experienced during my 2 years with you. Those stories of THE BAK-ED BEAN, or your opinion of cats, colours (especially of those good old wood colours), and those sounds of approval, and manly disapproval ( and sometimes shock ) as you lurked past our work, forever commenting. And who could forget the awesome fish and chip lunches, with Jack always ordering to much, and of course that fork.
I feel so honoured to have been apart of one of your many classes through your BC history. your stories, your sarcasm, our class ‘discussions’, that lead to your ranting.
Your time was not wasted as we all appreciated the time you have spent (without pay - WE KNOW). You will always be kept close in thought Sir.
At least you finally have some piece and quiet sir, R.I.P.
THANK YOU for EVERYTHING. SIR YOU ARE THE GREATEST!!!!
-Always missed, forever remembered : Mr Dobson

My husband and I both had art classes with Mr. D when we were at Birkenhead/Birkdale college in the early 90's.  He was an inspiration as well as being extremely wry and quirky.  It seems by reading memories from his more current students that nothing had changed.  We're sad to hear he passed away, but glad to hear that he had so many years of contributing his art teaching to the school, and so many students that he inspired.

Although i only had you for a term, you always said hi to me in the corriders (and of course sipping your coffee) and held out the door for me to walk through first, or stop to chat about my art work. Perhaps knowing most of my brothers helped alot. Well anyway, i was looking forward to Art next year. You taught me so much during that one term. I will miss you, and will always be on our minds. Thankyou so much for everything!

Rest in Peace

There is a certain gloom about C block this week. The lack of Mr Dobsons cheerful whistling and trott down the corridoors, no classical music nor fat freddy's drop echo through the classroom, no Barkus lazily lying around to welcome us to art, just a deathly silence as we all mourn the loss of the dedicated life and soul of C5. Mr Dobson was the most commited, loyal, inspiring, amusing, talented, knowledgable and passionate teacher that a student could ever wish for. It seems so unfair that he was taken away so suddenly without a chance to really ever thank him for what he has helped us to achieve, but on the other hand we were just blessed to have been taught by him for as long as we have.

There seems to be a lack of inspiration to paint now, for you really were the inspiration, our driving force. You passed on your passion for certain things, and in turn a lack of passion for such 'offending colours'. Now you will see what gods blood really looks like as opposed to fantasising and drueling when mixing up a paint colour for the background. Everybody seems to hesitate now, pondering whether or not you would approve... You truly made C5 the art room that it was, and it just seems so empty and average without you. It's hard to not just expect you to pop out from behind the structure and do something bizarre like spin off on a wee tangent about something, or do a little dance or pose, or exageratingly admire something.

As the shock and pain sinks in and the whistling fades, May you rest in peace and never ever be forgotten...
